qualify as likely voters. host: as he had been doing these polls, was hurricane sandy is a prize? caller: it certainly was an october surprise. it had an effect on this election. what we found from the poll is that about 7 in 10 voters approved the president's handling of the hurricane. that would be republicans and democrats. only about 15% disapproved. unlike the heavy criticism that president bush got for his handling of katrina, this became a very different situation. what has happened here, i think, are a combination of things. people saw the president at work. they saw him essentially being a good steward in a time of serious crisis. they saw the ability for him to reach across the aisle and to work with the republican governor, chris christie, the governor of new jersey. the third thing i think that came out of all of this is the sense that government has a role to play. and that in all three of those instances, good policy and good professional work probably was very good politics for the president. having said that, it is important to know that the change we have seen in

, sandy. it really clobbered new jersey. every morning i will be on a call where we speak to the governors of the affected states, and i found it remarkable the democrats and republicans are all acting together again. they are acting like when we got started in politics. the governor of delaware is a democrat on this call is saying, when asked what do you need, he said, i would like to say to chris christi, delaware has been hit. if you need any generators, you are going to hit more than we have been hit, so we will send them to you. ladies and gentlemen, that is how people are responding in the crisis, and that is what we have to go to again. there is a great story i like to tell. i am the oldest guy up here. i go back a long way. there used to be a guy in the house of representatives and in and named tipper o'neil. he is to have a party at his home. they used him as a poster boy for the democratic party in his last election. his only tough election he had his whole career, and he told the story standing out on the steps of his basement, he said, i lived next door, and i am maki
